Our systems take advantage of the drain-back technology:

Two temperature sensors control the solar system and allow it to operate freely. The Hi-temp sensor is located on the outlet of the collectors (solar panels). The Lo-temp sensor is on the coldest part of the tank.

When the solar collector temperature rises to about 18 degrees hotter than the tank temperature, the collector pump turns on. Water is pumped from the coldest part (the bottom of the tank) through the panels, picking up heat as it goes. The warmed water flows down the return line into the drain back tank. The system will continue to operate until based on the temperature sensors.

At the end of the day when the difference falls bellow 5oF, the controller turns the pump off and all the water drains from the collectors tank. This is also beneficial in that you do not have to drain the system seasonally.
